How to Apply a Graphic Without Bubbles: A Step-by-Step Guide
You’ve just received your Graphic can’t wait to apply it. Good news: with a little care, applying a Graphic without bubbles is well within your reach, even if you have no experience. Follow this step-by-step guide for a clean, long-lasting result.
The materials you'll need
- A degreasing cleaner (ideally isopropyl alcohol)
- A felt scraper or a stiff plastic card
- A heat gun or a hair dryer
- A precision cutter
- A clean microfiber cloth
- Patience—that's the most important ingredient
Step 1: Prepare the surfaces
This is the most important step, and the one everyone tends to rush through. If possible, remove the fairings: you’ll be able to work much more easily with them laid flat. Clean every surface thoroughly, then degrease them with alcohol. Even the slightest trace of grease, wax, or dust will prevent the adhesive from bonding properly and cause the film to peel off.
Step 2: Position without gluing
Hold the sticker in place without removing the protective film to mark its exact location. Use masking tape to create a hinge that will hold the sticker in place during application.
Step 3: Dry installation or wet installation?
Dry lay (recommended for small rooms)
Gradually peel back the film in small sections and smooth it down with the squeegee as you go, working from the center toward the edges. This motion removes air and prevents bubbles.
Water-based installation (for large areas)
Spray a mixture of water and a drop of soap onto the surface and the adhesive. The adhesive will become slippery, allowing you to reposition it; then use a squeegee to remove the water and air bubbles. This method is more forgiving of beginner mistakes.
Step 4: Shape to fit using heat
On curved surfaces (side vents, fenders, front panel), gently heat the vinyl with a heat gun. The heat makes it pliable, allowing it to conform perfectly to the contours without wrinkling. Do not overheat it: a few seconds are enough.
Step 5: Finishing touches and edges
Carefully trim off the excess material with a utility knife. Run the heat gun over all the edges and warm them slightly to seal the bond. This prevents the kit from peeling up during washing or while riding.
What if there's still a small bubble?
Don't panic. Poke a hole in it with a thin needle and use your finger to push the air toward the hole. It'll be invisible once you're done.
